CONTINUOUSLY DEVELOPING

Both of the fish species we farm, rainbow trout and whitefish, can be found on the green list of the WWF Seafood Guide. This means that WWF estimates that their domestic farming will not have a significant environmental impact.

We want to be a pioneer and raise awareness of responsible fish farming – both in terms of the environment and social responsibility. That is why we have gotten our operations ASC certified. The ASC (Aquaculture Stewardship Council ) is a label by which the consumer identifies fish that is farmed responsibly for both the environment and the surrounding society. You can read more about our ASC certification here.

CLIMATE FRIENDLY

Farmed Finnish fish is a good choice from a climate point of view compared to many other sources of animal protein. Fish are highly efficient feed utilizers. With a kilo of feed the fish grows a kilo. Therefore, the carbon footprint of farmed fish is quite small. According to research by Natural Resources Institute Finland, the climate impact of Finnish farmed rainbow trout is smaller than that of imported salmon.

NUTRIENT LOAD MANAGED

Most of the feed our fish eat is is made with raw materials from the Baltic Sea. Using such raw materials means that we are not adding nutrients to the Baltic Sea to cause eutrophication. The fish-derived raw materials we use are traceable and have been fished sustainably.

Fish farming is also always subject to environmental permits, and we constantly monitor our water load. The share of fish farming of Finland's total nutrient load to the Baltic Sea is around a few per cent for both phosphorus and nitrogen. That is quite little compared to other sources of nutrient loading.
